Introduction:

With help from Todd at Down Wind Sports in Marquette I was able to find all the Marquette region climbing areas. I would suggest visiting there store before trying to find these areas. He sent me out with a large topo map, whcih Abby and I found the clif called "Slugs Bluff", named after after the gentleman, Slug Arbelius, who owned the camp on top of the bluff and owned the little partystore/gas station known as just "Slugs". Slug Bluff is located just outside Palmer Michigan. The rock is a granite with slabs and short vertical faces being the norm. Low texture hard stone with very few roofs or overhangs to be found. The entire are is top rope or trad climbing only, no bolts or real bouldering.

Unfortunately the area also gets use as the local dump. You can actually drive to the top of this cliff with a little effort (finding the right dirt road). I noticed an abundance of broken glass and some old furniture which had been tossed over the edge. There seems to be several small faces along the southern rim of this high point. The road you drive in on will actually make a horseshoe shape around this area. Not there were several obsolete road I managed to follow and get off track with...try and remain on the main loop around the mountain.

Thanks to Russell Ault for sending me the updated information and historical facts about Slugs Bluff.

Season:
Best time of year is summer when temps range between 60 and 80 degrees. Michigan's Upper Penninsula is a nice break from climbing in the south, where temps are almost always in the 80's, but the quality of rock just isn't the same. I would recommend visting the Marquette area for climbing and mountain biking. If you are headed there anyow, bring your gear and try something different.

Guidebooks:
I could not find any guidebooks for this park, but stop by "Down Wind Sports" for some assistance (they also have a weekly climbing social night).
