WARNING: Mountain Biking is Potentially Dangerous!

Introduction:
Bald Mountain Recreation Area has 2 completely separate parks with 2 completely separate mountain bike trails. Both "Units" (North and South) are located west of Rochester, MI. The South unit which is the lesser used of the 2 is just north of the Palace, located off Lapear and Greenshield roads. This unit (South) is non-directional, tends to stay wet longer into the year, has less hills, and is less technical than the North Unit. The North unit is more popular, with better hills, more technical riding. The South unit has a total of 5-6 miles available. Mostly wide single track with a few short steep hills and occasional sand pit. A good trail for easy to moderate skill level, this place is excellent for bringing beginner friends. Unfortunatly the down side to this unit is that it remains wet for a long time in the spring, when dry the trail is fast but short. It is also visited by many different user groups, walkers, hikers, families, bikers, etc., please be courteous to other trail users. This unit is multi-directional, so be cautious when bombing the down hills or whipping around blind corners. It is very well marked with numbered signs to bring you right back to the beginning. rolling terrain, a few logs and lots of mosquitoes!

This South unit can be completed in under an hour but as always plan on the worst and hope for the best. Remember to pack plenty of water, food, and supplies. There are NO provisions for water here! bring what you will require and then some. The trail can be ridden as on continuous loop or it can be segmented by the many smaller trails. To do the loop just follow the numbered signs, it is very wel marked and every intersection has a map or sign. The state requires a pass for all cars. Maps and parking passes can be found at the park headquarters, a little farther down the road from the parking and the right. Please keep in mind these general Guidelines for safety and etiquette.

Season
All year long, again the best time to visit this trail is the fall! with cool temps and dry trails (Hopefully). This unit not as scenic as the North, but is very fast do to the lack of hills and less technical conditions. The Summer can be great accept for the humidity and mosquitos. Wear bright breathable clothing, bring bug repellent and as Dr. Lisa always says "Wear Sunscreen".

Amenities
There is an outhouse and a pump at the organizational camping area near post 8,and inside the main park at the beach there is water and toilet facilities (seasonal only).

Note: Michigan DNR asks that you don't use trails during wet weather or during spring thaw, this will damage the trails and possibly hurt MMBA/DNR relations.

Support The MMBA

Plea for Responsibility: With the growing number of new Mountain bikers, trail erosion has become very evident at several popular trails (Pontiac Lake, and Poto). The weekend traffic has grown heavier and less concerned, This has taken its toll. Trails that were handling challenges, have become speedways for the out of control masses. Even Highland, which is only a few years old is showing signs of misuse, I could barely ride A and B loops in 1996, now they are easily traversed. The many chapters of MMBA do a fantastic job on maintenance and access, but as riders we should share the burden and ride sensibly. Stay in control, ride on the beaten path (avoid short cuts), and try not to destroy any vegetation. Also, If you see someone tearing it up with total disregard for the trail and those who maintain it, SAY SOMETHING. When taking beginners on any trail, always try to teach some etiquette. You can use following the MMBA, and IMBA's Guidelines for trail etiquette.
